Changing the World

Thought I’d share some words I spoke to my friend, at the baby shower my girlfriends and I threw for her a couple of weeks ago.

If you’re a mom, or you know one that this applies to, perhaps this will bring encouragement and truth…

Dear (Friend),

You are about a month away from welcoming your fourth child into your family, and into the world.  What an unspeakable blessing!  I know you are feeling both excited and nervous at the same time, but I also sense the underlying peace and purpose you have, and I am so honored to be your friend and watch all that God is doing through you.  You and (your husband) are changing the world.  You are changing the world!  I know you already know the truth of this statement, and because I’m also a Mom, I know how easy it is to lose sight of this truth in the day to day tasks.  We know we’re changing diapers, changing the sheets on everyone’s beds, working on changing certain behaviors in our children, pausing before we speak so we can…ahem, hopefully change our tone, but changing the world?  Some days it seems a far off goal.  Since, I know you’re a very practical thinker, and in the weeks and months ahead, you may be a bit sleep-deprived and need to refer back to some hard evidence, here it is, based on the solid foundation of God’s Word in Titus 2.

Titus was an apostle assigned the task of living among the Cretans, and teaching the new Christians there how to set things straight on the island of Crete…how to reform a society in such disarray.  As we know, it was quite the assignment, as Cretans were described by those who lived among them as “always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons”, but Timothy, who was Titus’s mentor, wrote a letter with God-breathed instruction that is still relevant for our world today.

The heading on chapter two of Timothy’s letter is entitled “What Must Be Taught to Various Groups”, and Timothy gives direction on what Titus is to teach five categories of Cretans: older men, older women, younger women, young men, and slaves.  The instructions are so simple, and are still relevant for bringing lasting change and abundant life to individuals, to small and large communities, and we pray…to the world.

Here is God’s instruction on how the “younger women” (that’s you) are to go about changing the world.  They are to:

v.4…love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

I will now present my findings, line my line ;):

“love their husbands and children” – Your love for (your husband and children) is unmistakable.  You live it and breathe it.  You maintain a home that is a haven of peace for your family and your words and prayers build them up and cover them.  You are an inspiring wife and mother.

“be self-controlled and pure” – You are intentional and prayerful in the manner in which you conduct yourself.  Your words are true and gentle, and your guide on how to handle life’s circumstances and relationship is the Word of God.  I have watched you walk through sticky situations with grace, determined to unflinchingly adhere to truth and virtue.

“to be busy at home” –  (I could rest my case right here!).  You work hard each day bringing order to chaos, preparing nourishing meals (and homemade bread!), wiping!, and teaching your children how to think, how to speak and how to act.

“to be kind” – You are characterized by kindness, and many of us in this room have been recipients of your kind words and selfless deeds, from bringing a meal to offering warm hospitality, to praying a heartfelt prayer, you are so kind.

“to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the malign the word of God” – “subject to their husbands”? some would ask.  Yes, I’m going there.  Aside from husbands and wives having a passionate relationship with Jesus, there is nothing that can protect God’s intended foundation of family better than a wife respecting her husband, encouraging him in his leadership as a husband and father, and being unselfish in supporting him in the way God is leading him.  You do all of that for (your husband), and God is blessing you and your family for it.

So there you have it, girlfriend, YOU ARE CHANGING THE WORLD!

May God bless you, strengthen you, encourage you, and bring you success as you continue.
